Zelenskyi adviser: ‘Orbán is no friend of Russia’
Mychajlo Podoljak told telex.hu that his country is in the midst of a global conflict in which many states are lining up behind Russia and many other states behind Ukraine. He continues to expect support from the USA in particular, but also showed understanding for the position of Hungarian Prime Minister Orbán.
Podoljak: ‘I can absolutely understand Viktor Orbán’
‘I can absolutely understand Viktor Orbán. He wants to push the world towards dialogue instead of continued radicalisation and escalation. That is understandable, because in a world order characterised by dialogue, there are more opportunities to assert interests and forge alliances.’
In his opinion, the mistake lies in the fact that Russia cannot be explained on a rational basis. ‘You are mistaken if you think you can negotiate with Russia because it is prepared to comply with laws and treaties.’ Anyone who believes this does not understand the starting point of this war and the motivations of modern Russia.
Moral right questioned
In the eyes of Ukraine, Orbán is nonetheless no friend of Russia. ‘He is extremely pragmatic, focussed on national interests and wants to get the best for Hungary.’ As the leader of a sovereign country, he has every right to do so. However, Podoljak questioned whether Orbán also has the moral right to act in this way, especially because Hungary is an inseparable part of the EU with its values.
The presidential advisor confirmed that a dialogue had been initiated between Ukraine and Hungary. That in itself was a great success.
