Will Russian gas continue to flow to Central Europe?
According to the business portal portfolio.hu, the Hungarian state energy holding company MVM, the mineral oil company MOL and the employers’ association MGYOSZ have joined the initiative.
It is possible that SPP (or another economic player) would take over the Russian gas directly at the Russian-Ukrainian border and thus take transit through Ukraine to the EU into its own hands. The attempted solution involves capacities of around 15 billion cubic metres. Gas traders from four countries (Italy and Austria in addition to Slovakia and Hungary) are said to have signed the agreement, which must now be scrutinised by the EU Commission. The Ukrainian government in Kiev has just confirmed that it will allow the transit contract with Russia to expire at the end of the year. However, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal added that the government was open to concluding a new supply agreement with other partners.
