Szijjarto calls for ‘turning up peace camp’s volume’
"It is high time we turned up the volume of the pro-peace majority," Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said on Facebook on Thursday, adding that "the war in the neighbourhood is increasingly brutal, more and more people are dying and the risk of escalation is growing."
“We need to save lives and it is only possible in peace,” he said.
Szijjarto noted the crucial role of international organisations in achieving peace, with special regard to the United Nations. “The UN, being the largest organisation, should not be politicised, since it has the largest chance to initiate peace talks,” he said.
Szijjarto welcomed that Trinidad and Tobago’s Dennis Francis would take over the presidency of the UN General Assembly in September, and called him “a man similarly committed to the cause of peace”. At talks in New York, they agreed on mutual support, he added.
