In his message to Jose Pedro Aguiar-Branco, Kover expressed his “deep shock” over the vast forest fires blazing across northern and central Portugal which have claimed multiple lives.

The speaker expressed his sincere condolences on behalf of himself and his fellow lawmakers over what he called “one of the most serious natural disasters in recent years” and the heavy human and material losses suffered by many densely-populated areas.

Kover said he hoped that the Portuguese authorities and humanitarian organisations along with the international organisations that have offered their assistance can extinguish the flames and limit the damage.

The speaker expressed his “deepest sympathies” to his counterpart and asked him to extend it to the families of the victims and those injured in the disaster.
