Government official: Hungary sending rescue teams to flood-stricken Libyan port
Hungary is sending rescue teams composed of altogether 46 people and three search dogs to the Libyan port city of Derna hit by a devastating flood, the foreign ministry's state secretary said on Thursday.
The government is supporting the mission with 14 million forints (EUR 36,000) under its Hungary Helps humanitarian aid programme, Tristan Azbej, who is in charge of the programme, said on Facebook. The defence ministry provides help in transportation, he said.
The rescue teams have been dispatched in response to a request from Libyan authorities, Azbej added.
He noted that on Monday, floodwaters swept away dams protecting the city leaving at least 6,000 people dead and almost 10,000 missing.
