Number of tourists, nights spent continues to increase
The number of nights spent by domestic guests increased by 1.2% and that of international tourism nights by 9.1%. In January–October 2023, domestic guests spent 6.4% less and foreign ones 12% more tourism nights at tourist accommodation establishments than in the same period of the previous year.
In October 2023 the number of tourist arrivals was up by 6.9%, while that of tourism nights by 5.1% in total at tourist accommodation establishments. 74% of tourism nights were at commercial accommodation establishments, where turnover was 4.5% higher than a year earlier. Private and other accommodation establishments registered 6.8% more tourism nights than a year earlier.
The number of domestic tourist arrivals increased by 0.6% and that of domestic tourism nights by 1.2% compared to the same month of the previous year. Tourist arrivals numbered 674 thousand and the tourism nights spent 1.5 million at tourist accommodation establishments, within which commercial accommodation establishments registered 502 thousand tourist arrivals and 1.1 million tourism nights. 75% of the latter were spent at hotels, where the number of tourism nights was 1.2% higher than a year earlier. The number of domestic tourism nights spent at private or other accommodation establishments was up by 3.7% compared to October 2022. The two most popular tourism regions, Lake Balaton and the Eger tourism region, registered 19% and 12%, respectively, of domestic tourism nights, while Budapest’s share was 13%.
The number of international tourist arrivals rose by 15% and that of international tourism nights by 9.1% compared to the same month of the previous year. The 591 thousand guests having arrived at tourist accommodation establishments spent 1.6 million tourism nights there, of which commercial accommodation establishments registered 457 thousand guests and 1.2 million tourism nights, respectively. 82% of the latter were spent at hotels, where the number of tourism nights was 10% higher than a year earlier. The number of international tourism nights spent at private or other accommodation establishments grew by 9.8% compared to October 2022. Tourist accommodation establishments in Budapest accounted for 67% of foreign tourism nights, and the most popular tourism region was Lake Balaton with a 6.5% share.
A total of 21,675 tourist accommodation establishments, within which 2,484 commercial and 19,191 private or other accommodation establishments welcomed guests.
Of commercial accommodation establishments, 952 hotels and 1,059 boarding houses were open for part or all of October.
The total gross sales revenues of commercial accommodation establishments amounted to HUF 52 billion, which was 18% higher at current prices than a year earlier.
Széchenyi Recreation Card was used by cardholders to spend nearly HUF 2.3 billion, 7.4% more at current prices, at commercial accommodation establishments compared to the same month of the previous year.
In January–October 2023 compared to same period of previous year tourist accommodation establishments registered 1.5% more, a total of 35.6 million tourism nights.
Domestic guests spent 6.4% less and foreign ones 12% more (respective nearly 19 million and 16.7 million) tourism nights at tourist accommodation establishments.
