New edition of Mindszenty memoirs presented in Washington
The new edition of the memoirs of late Hungarian cardinal Jozsef Mindszenty were presented at the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation in Washington on Friday.
Daniel J. Mahoney, the editor of the new edition, outlined the life’s work of Mindszenty and summarized the creed of the late archbishop.
Mahoney said Mindszenty was at least as much a Hungarian patriot as he was a man of the church and religion and he refused to compromise with the communist oppressive power.
Mahoney noted the cardinal’s stance against totalitarian dictatorships in general, referring to the fact that Mindszenty also rejected Nazism and recalling that he was imprisoned in Hungary in 1944 following a takeover of the Hungarian Arrow Cross Party.
