Xenophobe faces prison sentence
The public prosecutor’s office has brought charges against a man who attacked another passer-by in the centre of Szeged in the summer simply because he thought he was a foreigner.
The man, who had several previous convictions, was moved to commit the racially motivated offence after he asked the stranger why he had come here and why he was not going home again. Without waiting for an answer, the offender punched the victim in the face.
The victim in turn tried to take a photo of the attacker with his smartphone, whereupon he was attacked again. A courageous customer from a nearby café intervened and held the attacker back. Fortunately, the victim only suffered minor injuries. The offender, who has a criminal record, now faces at least two years in prison if he regrets his offence and waives his right to a trial.
