Veterinary chief orders fowls to be locked up due to bird flu

Szabolcs Pasztor, Hungary's chief veterinary officer, has ordered that birds at farms in areas exposed to the deadly bird flu virus should be kept inside buildings or under strong wire nets, the food security authority (Nebih) said on Monday.

The measure affects counties in eastern and southern parts of the country, as well as in the north-west.

Fowls kept domestically must be held under roofed areas only while being fed, Nebih said, but added that keeping them inside all the time was recommended in order to prevent them from contacting wild birds.
