Transport minister criticises Strabag
As Transport Minister János Lázár explained on Monday in Szikszó at the residents’ forum on the problems of the new M30 motorway between Miskolc and Szikszó, the contractor Strabag has already been asked to repair it under the guarantee. Lázár even threatened to expel Strabag from the country if the renovation does not progress as expected.
The M30 was built at a cost of 354 billion forints and the first technical defect occurred just six months after handover. The 57 km section of the M30 motorway above Miskolc, which leads to the Slovakian border and Košice, was opened in 2021. However, a section of the motorway between Miskolc and Szikszó was closed by the operator MKIF Zrt. on 17 February 2024 after the road structure shifted in several places over a length of 150 metres and the road surface cracked.
According to Lázár, the renovation will take 10-11 months and the costs could reach around 5 billion forints. Experts from the Technical University of Budapest have been called in to investigate the defects.
