Tourism Agency: Hotels fully booked over May long weekend

Almost 200,000 guests spent 362,000 guest nights at commercial accommodations in Hungary during the May 1 long weekend, generating 7 billion forints (EUR 18.7m) in revenue, the Hungarian Tourism Agency (MTU) told MTI on Friday.

Domestic guests accounted for 187,000 guest nights, or 52 percent of the total, and foreign visitors for 175,000, MTU said.

One-third of the tourists came to the capital, spending 106,000 guest nights, 87 percent of which was spent by foreigners. Around 11 percent of the foreign visitors arrived from Poland, largely thanks to the pope’s visit, MTU noted.

Lake Balaton was the second most popular destination, followed by the Matra-Bukk hills and the surroundings of Budapest. Spa towns Hajduszoboszlo, Zalakaros, Eger, Gyula, Heviz and Buk also attracted large numbers of visitors.

Demand is high for accommodations over the long weekend of Pentecost at the end of May, with 230,000 nights already booked, almost twice as many as last year, MTU said.
