Three human smugglers arrested in Hungary

Hungarian police arrested three human smugglers in two incidents over the past 24 hours, police said on their website on Saturday.

On motorway M9 police wanted to stop a minibus with foreign licence plates for a road check on Friday evening but the driver refused to obey and fled towards the nearby village of Bogyiszlo. When the vehicle was finally halted there, seven men jumped out of it and tried to escape. They were detained shortly afterwards.

The four Afghans, two Pakistanis and one Indian who were unable to prove that they had entered Hungary legally were escorted to the temporary security fence along the Serbian border, police said. The minibus’s driver, a 44-year-old Austrian citizen, and his passenger, a 35-year-old Czech woman, were taken into custody, police said.

In another development, police stopped a car carrying 15 illegal migrants for a road check in Zsana, near the Serbian border. The 24-year-old driver, a Lithuanian citizen, suddenly opened the door, damaged the police car, and ran away but he was detained shortly afterwards, they said
