Szijjarto: Peace can only follow dialogue
Peace between Ukraine and Russia can only be reached if those who are party to the conflict can talk to each other, "that's why channels of communication must be kept open", Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said in an interview with CNN on Saturday.
Szijjarto said in the interview, conducted in English and posted on his Facebook page, that “if there’s no communication, if the channels are being cut, then we give up even the hope for peace”.
“As a neighbouring country, for us an immediate ceasefire and peace is vital and not only because we are neighbours but because of the fact that Hungarians are dying in this war,” Szijjarto said. Members of the ethnic Hungarian community, being Ukrainian citizens have been conscripted into the Ukrainian army, many of them have been deployed on the frontline and many of them have died, he added.
“So I’m representing a nation … members of which have already died in this war,” Szijjarto said.
