Symbol of hope
The seven-branched candlestick, which can be transformed into a Hanukkah candle, has carried the message of light for thousands of years and shines as a symbol of faith, hope and perseverance. At the ceremony, Andor Grósz, President of the Association of Jewish Religious Communities in Hungary (Mazsihisz), said that the menorah is not only a decorative element, but also a symbol that reflects the traditions and history of the Jewish community. It also shows the faith and hope of the patients in their recovery and the perseverance of the doctors and staff of the facility.
Grósz emphasised that with this symbol, the Jewish community proudly accepts its Jewishness and openly acknowledges its own identity. This makes it clear to everyone that this is a Jewish hospital – unique in Central Europe. The government is providing 2.8 billion forints from this year’s budget for the modernisation of the hospital.
Shemesh Assaf, the director of the hospital, said that the menorah is another step towards the complete modernisation of the hospital, as it is an important tool for the spiritual rehabilitation of patients. András Rózsa (Momentum), mayor of the Zugló district, said that residents can be proud to live in a district where the diversity of cultures and religions enriches the community and where the efforts and values of others are respected. The 2 metre wide and 3 metre high menorah was designed by sculptor Zénó Kelemen.
