Suspension of bike sharing service ‘not timely’

Alexandra Szentkiralyi reacted to the Budapest Public Transport Centre (BKK) announcing on Wednesday Mol Bubi’s suspension as of Nov. 29.

“Next year, a new bike sharing service that meets evolving urban transport needs will be made available,” BKK said.

Szentkiralyi said on Facebook that the government had implemented several measures, including ones that affect public transport, to prevent the rapid spread of coronavirus infections. Those measures are aimed at reducing the instances of human contact, she said, adding that this objective could also be served by alternative means of transport like bicycles.

“This is particularly true to big cities where several millions of people live, work, do shopping and use public transport,” Szentkiralyi said.

“Mol Bubi is very popular in Budapest, having been used by some 100,000 people back in the spring,” she said, adding that the service contributed to reducing crowds on public transport.
