Socialists exclude MP for ‘misleading’ party, public opinion

Leaders of the opposition Socialists excluded MP Ildiko Borbely Bango from party ranks at an extraordinary meeting on Sunday, after it was established that she "misled public opinion and the party" with regard to her level of education.

“The Socialist community has consistently condemned actions aimed at acquiring a diploma by circumventing or failing to fulfill requirements or fraudulent use of a non-existent degree,” the party said in a statement sent to MTI.

“From today, Ildiko Borbely Bango is no longer a member of the Socialists…will not run in the election and is being called on to give up her parliamentary mandate,” it added.

With the decision, the Socialists “consider the matter closed” but expect “Fidesz politicians ruined by the Volner-Schadl corruption scandal to leave public life, too”, the statement said.

On Saturday, news portal Mandiner said Borbely Bango’s curriculum vitae for parliament shows she was awarded a degree from the Budapest College of Economics, but the school’s legal successor, the Budapest Business School, could not confirm she got a diploma when asked.
