Retvari: Hungary good example for how migration policy can work
Retvari told an interparliamentary conference on the parliamentary control of security policy and joint security and defence policy that Hungary’s migration policy had not changed since 2015. External borders must be protected and all asylum procedures must be carried out outside the European Union borders, he added.
Internal border checks are being restored in an increasing number of places in Europe, as a direct consequence of Europe failing to protect its external borders, he said.
Retvari said only those should be allowed to cross the EU’s external border who have received a permit to do so because once somebody is allowed to enter, they can almost certainly stay if they want to.
Hungary has spent 2 billion euros on protecting the borders in recent years and it has not received any financial support, but even received a “gigantic fine”, Retvari said.
