PM security advisor: ‘Illegal migrants surrounded Europe’
Illegal migrants have "surrounded Europe", making their way to the continent along routes through Italy, Spain and the Balkans, the prime minister's chief domestic security adviser told public news channel M1 on Thursday.
Illegal migrants have also reached Germany through a new route via Belarus and Poland, Gyorgy Bakondi said.
Hungary has sent thousands of police officers to Serbia, Slovenia and North Macedonia over the past year, Bakondi said. They have so far detained 23,000 migrants, he said.
International cooperation is key in detecting and eliminating people smuggling rings, he said.
Noting a continued flow of migrants from Africa, Bakondi called talks between the Visegrad Group, the Hungarian prime minister and the Egyptian president in Budapest this week highly significant.
