“Please don’t overdo advertising!”, opposition MP says

The small opposition party Párbeszéd proposes amendments to the Consumer Protection and Advertising Act to prevent unethical and exaggerated advertising of meat production.

Co-chair Rebeka Szabó recalled that a few months ago, the advertisement of a large poultry farming company caused serious outrage among animal welfare organisations and well-meaning people. The inscription on the poster ‘Our chickens live like in a spa’ suggested that the life of the animals intended for consumption was ‘full of fun and joy’.

Such exaggerated advertising would promote meat consumption by creating a false image, knowing that people are reluctant to face the ethical questions raised by the consumption of animal products. In the age of the climate crisis and the ecological crisis, it is absolutely necessary to reduce meat consumption in the ‘western’ world, as the mass production of meat has an extremely high environmental impact and often causes suffering for the animals during their rearing.

At the same time, small-scale livestock farming and regenerative agriculture can have a positive impact on individual habitats. The party calls for a ban on exaggerations in relation to animal welfare claims in advertising and unethical commercial advertising for live animals or meat products intended for human consumption.
