Orbán: Government makes every effort to protect rights of ethnic Hungarians in Ukraine

The Hungarian government is making every effort to protect the rights of ethnic Hungarians in Ukraine, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has said in a letter to the head of the Hungarian Democratic Alliance in Ukraine in response to an open letter by the party leader concerning Ukraine's European Union accession, Orbán's press chief said on Tuesday.

Orbán said in the letter to Laszlo Zubanovics that it was premature for the European Union to start accession talks with Ukraine because the European Commission had not prepared this properly for the December meeting of the European Council, Bertalan Havasi said.

As a result, “we will propose that instead of a legally complicated membership, the European Union should aim to establish a strategic partnership with Ukraine,” Orbán added.

“I can assure you that we will continue to work towards ensuring that the ethnic Hungarian community in Ukraine should live in a peaceful, stable and developing country,” Orbán said, concluding his letter.
