Orbán discusses vaccine production with EU internal market commissioner

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán discussed vaccine production and defence and energy policy issues with Thierry Breton, the European Commissioner in charge of the EU single market, in Budapest on Friday, the PM's press chief said.

Breton is leading a new EU task force set up to identify and eliminate bottlenecks in vaccine production and distribution and work out rapid response to biological threats faced by Europe.

Member states’ dependence on non-EU countries evidenced during the pandemic and the need for EU members to create their own capacity in industries and strategic value chains of key importance was a matter stressed at the meeting, Bertalan Havasi told MTI. Exposure to outside suppliers must be reduced, especially in the area of raw materials of critical importance, and energy sovereignty must be further strengthened, he said.

Orbán told the commissioner that Hungary is focusing investment on the upgrade of universities, on sustainable green transport and energy, and the circular economy as well as on the acceleration of digitalisation.

The EU commissioner met Innovation and Technology Minister Laszlo Palkovics and Justice Minister Judit Varga earlier in the day.
