Nordmann fir is the favourite

Retailers expect prices for fir trees this Christmas to be on average 5-10% higher than last year.

This season, spruce trees are offered for 5-5,500 forints, silver fir for 6-8,000 forints and Nordmann fir for 8-10,000 forints per metre, reported the specialist portal agroform.hu. 72% of customers plan to spend at least 7,000 forints. As many as 44% plan to spend more than 10,000 forints on their Christmas tree and one in five customers (22%) more than 15,000 forints.

Nordmann firs continue to enjoy growing popularity: 62% of respondents prefer them, compared to 54% in a survey conducted in 2022. Spruces and silver firs occupy the next places on the popularity scale with 22% and 14% respectively. Around six out of ten shoppers want fir trees with a height of more than 1.5 metres. As many as 85% of customers postpone their Christmas tree purchases until the last two weeks before the festive season. A quarter of respondents stated that they wanted to decorate an artificial tree for Christmas. The main reason cited was the price advantage of multiple use (44%), with only 23% citing environmental protection as a deciding factor.

In Hungary today, 600-700 family farms grow fir trees on 3,500 hectares, and the amount thus obtained covers around three quarters of domestic demand.
