New heat record in Hungary

August 17 was the hottest on record in Hungary, according to the National Meteorological Service (OMSZ).

The mercury hit 37 degrees Celsius in both Baja and Kubekhaza, in southern Hungary, on Wednesday, OMSZ said on Facebook. The highest temperature ever recorded in Hungary on Aug. 17, before today, had been 36.8 C. in Pecs, in the south, in 1946.

Forecasts show daytime temperatures rising as high as 39 C. on Thursday and 40 C. on Friday.

The chief medical officer has issued a highest-level heat alert from Wednesday until Friday midnight.
