Modernisation of Eastern Railway Station started
Budapest’s Eastern Railway Station is celebrating its 140th anniversary this year. Unfortunately, it has been in the headlines recently due to two train derailments. The two incidents had nothing to do with each other from a technical point of view, but were likely to affect passengers’ sense of safety and the punctuality of trains. For this reason, the originally planned eastern station programme has now been accelerated, according to MÁV CEO Zsolt Hegyi.
The Eastern Railway Station was opened in August 1884. The Hungarian State Railways MÁV began building the new railway station in 1881. The steel structure of the hall was designed by bridge engineer János Feketeházy, who also designed the roof of the Opera House and the Liberty Bridge.
