Ministry to provide funds for a hundred charging stations

At the beginning of November, the Ministry of Energy will launch a tender to promote the expansion of the charging infrastructure for electric vehicles.

The 28 billion forint (approx. 70 million euros) programme is intended to close the gaps in the charging network in rural areas. Applicants must commit to installing at least one e-charging station in settlements in areas that are currently underserved. In total, public e-charging stations are to be built at over 100 locations across the country in the coming years. By the end of 2023, more than 2,500 public charging stations will be available to electric car users across the country. However, almost half of these are located in Budapest and its agglomeration. The remaining stations were mainly installed along the motorways and in the most populous cities.

In the first round of the technical tender, companies have until 21 October to state their preferences and select the 15 most attractive municipalities. The minimum amount of funding per company is HUF 100 million and the maximum HUF 4 billion. The subsidy takes the form of a low-interest loan with a maximum term of 15 years. In addition, at least 10% equity capital must be contributed.

Subsidies can also be granted for the construction of charging stations with energy storage systems and/or systems for generating electricity from renewable energies. As part of a parallel programme, companies can apply for a total of 30 billion forints in subsidies for the purchase of purely electrically powered cars, vans or minibuses by next spring.
