Ministry: Szeged mirror carp gets EU protected geographical indication status
The European Commission has granted protected geographical indication (PGI) status to the Szeged mirror carp, making it the fourth Hungarian freshwater fish type to get EU protection, the ministry of agriculture said on Wednesday.
The Szilvasvarad trout and Balaton fish earlier received PGI status, and the Akaszto carp protected designation of origin (PDO) status.
The PGI title has been granted to the Szeged mirror carp live fish and also to fish meat, the statement said.
Its farming area covers a fishing lake network of 141 lakes, including Lake Feher near Szeged, in southern Hungary, and the natural water catchment area of the southern Great Plains.
