Magyar Posta to shutter more than 300 post offices for good

State-owned Magyar Posta on Monday said it will close more than 300 post offices for good.

The post offices were among 364 temporarily closed in the autumn to cope with higher energy costs, while 45 re-opened after talks with local councils.

Even with the closures, Magyar Posta still operates about 600 more post offices than the statutory minimum, offering customer service in over 2,200 locations, the statement said.

Magyar Posta also announced the launch of a new partner programme that seeks to pair post offices with local councils or businesses that could share spaces. Already, 19 Takarekbank branches and two food retailers operate at post offices in a way that “benefits both customers and business partners”, it said.
