LMP to participate in demonstration in solidarity with teachers

To show solidarity with teachers, opposition LMP will participate in the demonstration teachers' unions are staging on Monday afternoon in Budapest, the party's deputy group leader said.

“While the government takes away with one hand, it does not give with the other, either,” Mate Kanasz-Nagy told a press conference.

He said that the amendments being drafted to be submitted to the law on the legal status of teachers “strip teachers” of many of their entitlements. They would introduce a new disciplinary regime involving the suspension of salary payments, extend the number of hours of daily and weekly work and require work on Sunday, among other restrictions, the lawmaker said. The right of teachers to strike would be further restricted, he added.

“As regards the salary increase of teachers, the cabinet keeps referring to the European Union,” he said and demanded an immediate 50 percent increase in teachers’ wages.

LMP protests against those changes and will participate in the demonstration on Monday afternoon, he said.
