Karacsony: Budapest municipality to contribute to suburban railway upgrade
The Budapest municipality will contribute towards revamping state-maintained HEV suburban railway lines, Gergely Karacsony, the city's mayor, said on Monday.
The government had intended to revamp the HEV lines using European Union recovery fund money but the investment “got stuck”, Karacsony said on Facebook, adding they “ran out of time” as the accounts must be finalised by October 2026.
He insisted that the metropolitan leadership came to the government’s aid, saying that “our better-prepared transport developments were transferred to financial funds” related to the investment closing in two-and-a-half years’ time, adding that the government had won extra time as a result.
