Justice minister: Hungary, EC nearing agreement on recovery funds

An agreement on European Union recovery resources for Hungary is within reach, following a series of professional debates between the country and the European Commission, Justice Minister Judit Varga said on Tuesday, adding that a deal could be reached in the second half of the year.

Taking into consideration the EC’s recommendations, the justice ministry on Tuesday submitted two proposals to parliament aimed at bringing about an agreement as soon as possible, Varga said on Facebook.

In line with the commission’s recommendations, the amendment proposals to the law on legislation, the law on social participation in the preparation of legislation and the law on criminal proceedings aim to ensure more time for social consultations and allow room for judicial remedy against prosecutor decisions on closing corruption-related investigations, the minister said.

Varga said the ministry had been able to submit the bills thanks to a “continuous convergence of positions”. The submission of the bills to parliament proves that the government believes in open professional dialogue based on mutual respect, she said.

Hungary is committed to reaching an agreement with the EC as soon as possible, Varga added.
