Justice minister: Government to compensate victims of police actions at 2006 protests

The government will offer compensation to 53 people injured due to excessive force used by police in anti-government protests in the autumn of 2006, Justice Minister Judit Varga said on Facebook on Saturday.

“The soul of an entire nation was wounded in the autumn of 2006 by the senseless violence perpetrated by government at the time, when it proceeded to punish the people with batons instead of answering for its own crimes and failures,” Varga wrote.

The minister said there were still some people who were injured in the “police attacks” in the 2006 protests who had yet to receive any compensation.

The government will therefore offer 862 euros, which corresponds to the sum already provided to other victims of the protests, in compensation to the 53 people “whose fundamental rights were trampled on by the Gyurcsany government” but have not yet been compensated, she said.
