Justice minister: EU applying double standards to Hungary
Hungary is contending with infringement proceedings due to similar measures, Judit Varga said on Facebook.
She said it was “interesting” that notwithstanding the rule overlaps between the two countries, the Court of Justice of the European Union had already found Hungary in breach of its obligations, yet the European Commission had not raised similar concerns with Lithuania.
Varga also noted the 550km barbed wire fence Lithuania built on the Belarusian border in the summer and contrasted the response to that given to Hungary in 2015, “when we were the first” in Europe to protect the country’s borders.
Now the “champions of the rule of law”, she said, were silent, adding that “double standards” were now operating “at an unprecedented level”.
