Hungary’s police launch ‘world first’ app with rewards for drivers who stick to speed limit

The Hungarian police are launching an application dubbed OBBPoint which rewards drivers who comply with speed limits with points, police.hu said on Tuesday.

The scheme, which the website said was “the first of its kind in the world”, offers reward points which can be used to get discounts and gifts in shops and for various services.

The OBBPoint app will be available for both Android and IOS from early August, and users will have to register to download it, police.hu said.

When activated, the app will monitor the speed of the vehicle and accumulate credits for journeys if speed limits have been observed. Stepping over the speed limit for short periods, such as for overtaking another vehicle, will not be considered a violation.

Police said that no data collection would take place either when points are collected or when the credits are used for purchases.
