Hungarian prisons no longer overcrowded, says national commander

Due to some major development projects over the past few years, Hungarian prisons have ceased to be overcrowded, the national commander of the Hungarian prison service said on Friday.

Tamas Toth told a press conference that the saturation of Hungarian prisons had declined from 146 percent in 2013 to 96 percent by now.

A total of 150 billion forints (EUR 430m) worth of developments over the past four years involved opening a new prison, expanding ten existing facilities, modernising the information technology systems used by the prison service, as well as the vehicle fleet and security technology equipment, he added.

Toth also said that Hungary was the only country in Europe with employment of prisoners capable of work.
