Human traffickers in custody

Romanian police picked up a Moldovan man at the weekend who was wanted by Hungary on an international arrest warrant.

The suspected people smuggler had caused a serious road accident on the motorway to Ferenc Liszt Airport in April, resulting in two deaths, and subsequently committed a hit-and-run.

For unknown reasons, the 22-year-old people hauler had driven his vehicle, which was travelling far too fast, into the opposite lane and collided head-on with an oncoming car. The driver of the car with Bulgarian licence plates left the scene of the accident, as did the other occupants, seven illegal immigrants from Nepal, without providing any assistance to the victims. Investigators in Budapest were quickly able to identify the perpetrator and launched an international manhunt. Colleagues in Romania have now succeeded in apprehending the people smuggler, who was immediately transferred to Hungary. Here he has to answer for causing a serious accident resulting in death, failing to render assistance and being a people smuggler.
