Gulyas calls on European Christian Democrats to organise

With smaller parties pitted against each other and the shift to the left of the European People’s Party (EPP), Gulyas said “the field has opened”.

“Our task is to bring together Christian Democrat movements, parties and forces and create an institutional framework for them,” he added.

Gulyas said Christian Democrats are “particularly strong” in Central Europe, but have no representation on the European political scene any longer.

He said “vast differences” exist between systems of values in Western Europe and Central Europe, adding that “Hungarians don’t tell Swedes, Belgians or Germans how to live, and we expect the same in return”.

At a panel discussion on the “Renaissance of Christian Democrats in Europe”, Gulyas pointed out the importance of establishing an alliance of parties to the right of the EPP that is free of radical elements.

“We would gladly blaze the trail ahead,” he added.
