Government official: Water management strategic issue

Water management is a strategic issue for Hungary's future, the deputy state secretary for water management said on Wednesday, marking World Water Day.

The protection of water quantity and quality is becoming increasingly important as climate change weighs, Pal Rethy said.

Currently, some one-third of the European Union’s territory suffers from water scarcity, when demand exceeds water reserves at certain times, Rethy said. Water resources can be used sustainably through innovation, sparing use and recycling, he said.

Hungary’s water management sector has implemented 79 projects by 2022, to the tune of 412 billion forints (EUR 1.1bn), including a flood protection system on the River Tisza, in northeast Hungary, and a reservoir further downstream on the river, he said.
