Free parking to put extra strain on city traffic during metro 3 revamp

Free parking triggering increased car traffic will put extra strain on the capital city where a central section of metro line 3 will be closed for renovations, the Budapest Public Transport Centre (BKK) said.

BKK said it has been advising the public over the past weeks that heavier traffic and longer travel times could be expected in the central parts of Budapest due to the renovation of the metro section between Lehel Square and Nagyvarad Square.

The situation is expected to be most critical along Vaci Road, Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Road and Kiskorut, but restrictions, detours and lanes marked for metro replacement buses will affect traffic in the city in general, the centre said in a statement.

BKK noted that the government on Tuesday introduced free parking across Hungary among measures related to the coronavirus epidemic.

It said that BKK and the municipality of Budapest “are aware that using a car would make life a lot more comfortable for many people seeking to get to their destination, but increased vehicle traffic generated by free parking during the metro renovation will put additional strain on commuters”.
