First section of Pest integrated tram network inaugurated

The first section of the integrated tram network on the Pest side of the capital city was inaugurated in the district of Ferencvaros on Friday.

A new pair of tracks have been constructed between Haller Street and Soroksari Road in northern Pest.

Budapest’s mayor, Gergely Karacsony, said at the handover ceremony that the aim was to build a similar tram network to the one on the Buda side of the city, with a view to reducing the need for passengers to make connections.

The 2 billion forint (EUR 5.5m) project “is a small but very important step”, he said.

Karacsony said that because of the economic crisis caused by the coronavirus epidemic, development resources in Budapest were likely to shrink, adding that it was better to make investments that were not necessarily visually eye-opening but genuinely help people in their day-to-day lives.

The investment, he added, would come into its own once the upgrade of the middle section of metro line 3 has been completed, since tram travel between Oradea Square and the city centre will then be possible.
