Fidesz: Opposition left still serving foreign interests for dollars

Noting that MPs are scheduled to vote on the sovereignty protection law later on Tuesday, the ruling Fidesz party issued a statement saying that left-wing parties had already vowed to vote against it, and this showed they still represented foreign interests for dollars.

Fidesz said it was illegal for parties to accept foreign financing. The new law goes further and makes foreign campaign financing a crime with a potential prison sentence. “This closes the loopholes for the left’s trickery”, the statement said.

It added that the left had received millions of foreign dollars for their 2022 election campaign, funnelled through Ferenc Gyurcsany, the leader of the Democratic Coalition, and Gergely Karacsony, the mayor of Budapest.

“This amounts to political corruption, foreign interference in Hungarian elections, and an illegal attack on Hungary’s sovereignty,” Fidesz’s statement said. “We will protect Hungary’s sovereignty.”
