Fidesz MEP accuses EP of playing role of ‘political police’

The left-wing, pro-migration members of the European Parliament "play the role of political police", harshly attacking national governments and countries that say no to illegal immigration, "forced gender ideologies" and decisions made in Brussels about "what can be thought and said", an MEP of ruling Fidesz said on Wednesday.

Balazs Hidveghi told the Hungarian media after a debate on the rule of law in Europe at an EP plenary session that left-wing MEPs had threatened with legal measures and the withdrawal of financing during the meeting which grew into a political debate.

Hungary rejects such threats and considers them unacceptable, Hidveghi said. Pressurising and ideological debates of this type only hurt the European Union, creating tension and discord between member states, he added.

The EP’s left-wing, pro-migration members are unwilling to accept that different systems of values coexist in the EU and different types of governments operate on their basis, he said.

Hungary and Poland have been the targets of attacks for a long time, Hidveghi said. Those that launch the attacks are not aware of the basics of democracy and refuse to understand that democracy means diversity and accepting different opinions, he added.

They attempt to dress up a political debate as a legal one when they use for blackmail the EU resolution on rule of law requirements in effect since January 1, he said.

The Hungarian left-wing MEPs support this and even the European People’s Party have “joined the chorus of the left-wing majority”, repeating “the same unacceptable and ill-conceived opinions over and over”, he added.

“Political debates must be settled by political means and each other’s positions must be accepted,” Hidveghi said.
