Evening fireworks postponed

The operative group overseeing the safety aspects of Hungary's August 20 celebrations has decided to postpone the traditional evening fireworks display due to forecasts of poor weather conditions.

Zoltan Kovacs, the state secretary for international communications and relations and the head of the body, said in a statement that having considered the forecasts provided by the National Meteorological Service and the opinions of the event’s organisers, the operative board had concluded that it would not be safe to go ahead with the 9pm fireworks show. Instead, the fireworks will be held at 9pm next Saturday, he said.

The operative board has also recommended moving the festive holy mass scheduled for 5pm from St. Stephen Square to St Stephen’s Basilica, Kovacs said. Further, the procession of Saint Stephen’s Holy Right Hand, which was scheduled to be held at St Stephen’s Basilica, should be replaced with a musical prayer session, he added.

Forecasts for the rest of the day show periodic showers and downpours across the country.
