Energy minister: Government to help solar projects with HUF 75 billion

The government will invite bids for grants worth a combined 75 billion forints (EUR 193.5m) early next year aimed at helping households instal solar panels and batteries, the energy minister said at a conference on Thursday.

Csaba Lantos said his ministry aimed to encourage households to use solar panels which could cover their own electricity consumption. Winning bidders will receive grants to cover 65 percent of their project. The new systems will generate electricity during the day, while the household could use the stored energy through the night, he added.

From January 1 on, the government will lift an earlier, interim ban on feeding energy generated by households into the national grid on 93 percent of the national system, affecting 84 percent of households with solar panels.

Household solar panels installed before January 1, 2026 will benefit from an annual settlement of electricity bills for 10 years, Lantos noted.
