DK: Opposition win ‘crucial for obtaining EU funds’

Hungary is in dire need of European Union recovery funds, and obtaining them hinges on the united opposition's ability to win the April 3 general election, a Democratic Coalition official said on Monday.

Laszlo Varju, who heads parliament’s budget committee, told an online press conference that it was “clear” that the Hungarian government’s recovery plan, which is key to securing community funding, fell short of meeting EU criteria.

The EU recommendations to Hungary “usually stress the importance of improving the public procurement system due to heightened risk of corruption,” he added.

Varju slammed the government for “saying breezily that we don’t need the money from Brussels” while at the same time raising money on the international markets at a higher interest rate.
