Dismissed teachers victorious in court
This was determined by the Budapest Court of First Instance in its judgement. The teachers had taken part in the civil disobedience movement after strikes were officially banned, whereupon they were dismissed without notice by the headmaster. The five teachers in question appealed against this decision. The court considered the claim to be justified only in part, but awarded the plaintiffs a total of just under 28 million forints (70,000 euros) for lost pay and the statutory severance pay to which they were entitled.
In his extraordinary dismissal, the headmaster had not even taken into account the fact that one of the teachers ultimately held his lessons on the ominous day of civil resistance. In the case of the other teachers, who had been recognised for many years or decades for their exemplary work in the education system, the court also saw no basis for dismissal without any prior warning due to the one-day protest. Especially as many teachers from other schools were allowed to continue their work after the end of the protests.
