Decline in deaths outpaces decline in births in August

The number of births fell by 5.3 percent in August compared with the same month in the previous year, while deaths dropped by 11 percent, according to preliminary data published by the Central Statistical Office (KSH) on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the number of marriages decreased by 17 percent in the same period.

Fully 7,695 children were born in August, while there were 9,504 deaths. Altogether, 6,586 couples got married.

The natural population loss was 1,809 people compared with 2,538 in August 2022.

Fully 57,398 children were born between January 2023 and August 2023, 1.8 percent fewer than in the same period of last year. Altogether 84,125 people died between January 2023 and August 2023, 7.6 percent fewer than in the same period of last year.

In the same period, 33,162 couples tied the knot, 27 percent fewer than in the same period of last year.

There were 9.0 live births and 13.2 deaths per thousand inhabitants, the former level with the January-August 2022 period, while the death rate was 0.1 of a percentage point lower.
