Deaths outpace births in February
Preliminary data show that 6,526 children were born and 10,760 people died in February, with the number of live births increasing by 7.2 percent and deaths decreasing by 14 percent between March 2022-February 2023 compared with the same period a year earlier, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) said on Friday.
The natural population loss was 4234 in February this year as against 6,360 in February 2022, KSH said.
In February 2023, 1,937 couples tied the knot, down 45 percent from February 2022.
In the past 12 months, 89,752 children were born, down 1.6 percent from the same period of last year, while 132,590 people died, 15 percent fewer than in the previous year.
The natural population loss came to 42,838 compared with 64,361 in the same period of last year, a drop of 33 percent.
Between February 2022 and January 2023, 61,519 couples were married, 13 percent fewer than in the previous year.
