Constitutional lawyer, activist Daniel Karsai dies at 47

Daniel Karsai, the constitutional lawyer battling ALS died on Saturday. Karsai was diagnosed with incurable amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in 2023. He then started a campaign for active euthanasia to be allowed in Hungary, and turned to the Court of Justice of the European Union over the issue.

The CJEU rejected Karsai’s claim, saying the palliative care provided in Hungary allowed for a peaceful death. His appeal was also denied.

The CJEU also said that Hungarian legislation banning medical euthanasia both in the country and in respect of countries where it can be legally performed does not constitute a violation of human rights.
