Company to pay 300 million forints of toll charges
The state toll company NÚSZ Zrt. has finally won a protracted legal dispute against a vehicle dealer who had accumulated the brutal amount of penalty fees for the unauthorised use of toll roads in a single year with his rental cars. In November 2021, NÚSZ Zrt. filed a lawsuit with the Budapest District Court to enforce its claims.
The company being sued failed to equip its fleet of more than 200 rental cars with motorway vignettes. This resulted in around 5,000 unauthorised uses of toll road sections. During the court proceedings, it was established that the car dealer had ignored the notifications sent by registered letter from the state toll company for years and had not even attempted to initiate measures that could have significantly reduced the fines as part of an amicable settlement.
Since under current law it is not the vehicle user but the vehicle owner who has to pay the fine, NÚSZ Zrt. is now initiating debt collection proceedings against the company.
