Chief of staff: Hungary sticking to decision against sending weapons to Ukraine
The meeting of NATO chiefs of staff in Prague focused on the war between Russia and Ukraine, Borondi said.
The chiefs of staff reviewed the current trends and actions and discussed the alliance’s so-called vigilance activity, including the preparation, training and cooperation of the battle groups set up in NATO member states, as well as the implementation of the approved defence plans, Borondi said.
He said that in his address to the meeting he had explained that Hungary supports Ukraine with non-lethal aid but was sticking to its decision against delivering weapons to its north-eastern neighbour. Hungary, he added, was also continuing the training of the vigilance battle group comprising Hungarian, Croatian, Turkish and Italian troops set up in Hungary.
Regarding the mood at the meeting, Borondi said expectations about the outcome of the war were not as positive as in the past.
He also said the question of how NATO can prepare itself to meet the challenges of the 21st century was becoming a more frequent topic within the committee.
Meanwhile, Borondi said he had spoken with General Christopher G. Cavoli, NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe, and the representatives of France and Croatia on the sidelines of the meeting.
